Everyone at my dinner party goes crazy for this dish!

This Amish Hamburger Steak Bake is a comforting and deeply flavorful casserole, perfect for a satisfying family dinner. Tender hamburger steaks are nestled with thinly sliced potatoes and onions, all smothered in a rich mushroom gravy and baked until bubbly and cheesy.

Ingredients:

Ingredient Quantity
Ground beef 1 pound
Garlic powder 1 teaspoon
Onion powder 1 teaspoon
Salt 1 teaspoon
Black pepper 1/2 teaspoon
Dried thyme 1/2 teaspoon
Olive oil 2 tablespoons
Sliced mushrooms 1 cup
All-purpose flour 2 tablespoons
Milk 1 1/2 cups
Medium potatoes, thinly sliced 4
Large onion, thinly sliced 1
Shredded cheddar cheese 1 cup

Instructions:

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Form & Brown Patties: In a large bowl, mix the ground beef with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and dried thyme. Form the mixture into 4 uniform patties. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Brown the patties on both sides for about 3-4 minutes per side, just to get a good crust. Remove the browned patties from the skillet and set them aside.
  3. Cook Mushrooms & Make Gravy: In the same skillet (no need to clean it), add the sliced mushrooms and cook until they are soft, about 5-7 minutes. Sprinkle the all-purpose flour over the cooked mushrooms and stir to combine, cooking for about 1 minute. Gradually whisk in the milk, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens into a smooth gravy.
  4. Layer Casserole: Lightly grease a baking dish (a 9×13 inch dish or similar size works well). Layer the thinly sliced potatoes and thinly sliced onion evenly in the bottom of the prepared dish. Place the browned hamburger patties on top of the potato and onion layer.
  5. Pour Gravy & Bake (Covered): Pour the mushroom gravy evenly over the entire dish, ensuring everything is well coated. Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil. Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes.
  6. Add Cheese & Finish Baking: Remove the foil from the dish. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese generously over the top of the casserole. Return the dish to the oven and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the potatoes are tender.
